Here's some surprisingly good news: BC does better (though they don't advertise it) than much of higher ed when it comes to providing financial aid to students who are estranged from their parents. If you are in this situation you can go to the financial aid office and explain the estrangement and they will help you fill out your financial aid paperwork...many students have reported success with this! Also, If you or your parents are married (same sex) or in a domestic partnership California provides additional paperwork to assure that DOMA doesn't stop your financial aid process.

Safe Space Program

Picture
The Bakersfield College Safe Space program was created by the Student Government Association as a way for members of our College to create a supportive environment for our LGBTQ community.

"Safe Spaces" are places on our campuses where the college representatives have decided to publicly identify themselves as making an effort to understand and support the needs of the LGBTQ community. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to participate in the 3 hour safe space training sessions.

Our advisors and several of our club members have attended the training sessions and given these sessions rave reviews. Ask your Profs if you can get extra credit for attending!

Visit the SGA Safe Space page to see the list of training dates as well as a downloadable list of all faculty who have completed the training. http://bakersfieldcollegesga.weebly.com/safe-space.html
