Our Mission

To create a comfortable atmosphere for the youth and younger generations in the community by providing a “support system.” We also refer our members to resources attained from the community such as info on HIV Prevention Medications & PFLAG (Parents from Lesbian and Gay families) where families meet other families going through similar difficulties dealing with LGBT. Joining local LGBT+ Pizza nights and other community hangouts are also common. This provides a foundation to build new friendships in a comfortable and fun atmosphere!

We are here to motivate others and bring out that inner confidence and acceptance for themselves, as we hope they do the same. Not only are we here for Bakersfield College Students, we also service the community, allowing them to also join or club meetings and events. We do outreach to the community including High schools, Bakersfield's AID's Project, Bakersfield LGBTQ, and we welcome you!

BC Gender & Sexuality Awareness Hits the Spot Light
We give Special Thanks to Sal Cruz for writing a great piece on our Student Org. We appreciate your hard work, thank you!

"Bakersfield College has a wide variety of clubs available for students to join. However, it can be a little hard to find out more about them, especially if you’re a bit shy about just showing up to meetings without knowing already anyone. My aim with this series is to get to know more about the club, find out what they’re “all about”, and share it with you. There will be two specific parts— an interview, and a first-hand narrative of my experience attending the club.

I hope you enjoy!" -Sal

In the Article, Sal touches on some of our goals. Building mentorships & support for students to succeed along with gender awareness through education can become small steps in finding out who you are. We help guide individuals in finding their true selves, leading them towards a more focused future. We also create an atmosphere of support and acceptance for not only High School & College Students, but the community as well.

Along with building support systems for the GBTQL-mnop and bringing gender awareness, we also touch on more serious subjects like sexuality and relationships.

GSA provides advice and is confidential for all who join. We have access to many resources in the community, including info on GBTQL friendly doctors.

Ian Equality discusses how relationships will work in the club. Making sure to emphasize on keeping them professional during meetings regardless of it being a friendship, relationships, or any other type of relationship out there. "We respect one another." -Ian

"All in all, I was very happy with my experience attending the GSA club meeting. I recommend anyone and everyone to attend. Even if you do not personally fall under the umbrella of “LGBTQ”, the club is a warm and welcoming student organization where one is sure to make friends, have fun, and give back to the community." - Sal

BC GSA wins Constitution Day!!!
On September 17 the BC GSA won BEST Constitution Day Booth. Club members provided great information from Lambda Legal regarding the significant changes to same-sex couples legal rights after DOMA and created a fun and exciting atmosphere for all at their marriage booth.

Guests were invited to accessorize at the booth, stand before a celebrant and say the following:

The vows:

Do you celebrate same sex marriage in California?

I do.

Do you celebrate federal recognition and federal rights for same sex couples?

I do.

I now pronounce CELEBRATION!

The BC Gender and Sexuality Awareness Club is having a fabulous Spring!
It is the mission of the Bakersfield College Gender and Sexuality Awareness Club to act as an advocate for students of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning (LGBTQ) community; to facilitate a safe environment for LGBTQ students and allies; to offer support to affiliate organizations of local high schools; and to promote a culture of acceptance on campus through education.
